A Montana Wolf  Framed Art Print

With night approaching on a crisp Montana evening, I can easily imagine this wolf meandering through the forest. A scout, on a mission.

Being a Montana girl, I’ve spent countless days and nights in the woods of Montana. Even during the winter months! Only once, have I ever encountered a Wolf scout on his own, in his element. I’ve heard them of course, howling every night, but only once have I ever come face to face with a Wolf in the wild. It was eerie really, there is no other way to describe it. He just sat there, across the stream, watching my husband and I, watch him. I’ll never forget that! He was almost white though, like a very light, almost sun bleached gray. Beautiful!

That was my inspiration for the above painting. The wolf may be different, but only because I felt a white almost gray wolf would blend too much with the surrounding snow.

“Hanging with Mom in Glacier Park” By TaSha Franklin

A Glacier Park Grizzly Bear Art Print

Having been born and raised in Montana, just 35 miles from Glacier Park, it should come as no surprise that I happen to be a regular. Camping and hiking in Glacier Park is an incredible experience. During the summer months the place is usually packed with vacationing families, however, being a local comes with some advantages, insert wink-face here, ha! There are a few places in Glacier that still stay somewhat quiet, however, that is not true for the landscape in this particular painting.

Lake Josephine in Glacier Park is a busy place during the summer, but oh so beautiful! With Mount Guild hovering over in the background, I can totally imagine Momma Bear and Cub playing here on the logs in the early morning quiet, just before it gets wild. I love the idea of taking a peak at a hidden world, something we don’t, or can’t see with our human eyes. It’s magical to me. Like those half underwater, half above water photographs, that offer a glimpse of what the underwater world looks like, while simultaneously offering you a glimpse of above water. The only difference is that I wanted both worlds to be connected somehow, which is why Momma Bear’s keen eye spotting the rainbow trout really pulled it together.

“Double Exposure Wolf” By TaSha Franklin

Here in Montana, the Wolf wears many faces. They are considered beautiful and majestic, yet dangerous and deadly. Depending on who you talk to, you may even find that some people carry a very strong dislike for them, while others still consider them a species that needs to be protected.

For me personally, while I understand both sides of the argument, and respect them wholeheartedly, the wolf means something else entirely to me.

I am a 3rd generation Montana girl, and my grandfather was a cattle rancher. He raised cows, that was his life. That was how he fed his family, how he clothed his children, and how he put a roof over their heads. His lively hood was his cattle, and honestly, had wolves been an issue back then, I have no doubt my Grandfather would have been one of those with a strong dislike for them, he was Irish after all…..

But regardless, to me, they are one of God’s creations, and that in itself is reason enough to respect them.

When I was a teenager/adult, I remember riding dirt bikes with a group of friends in the woods. Two of us decided to stop and take a rest by a stream. It was beautiful, and quiet. I don’t remember how long we sat there, but when we finally decided to pack up and get back on the trail, I remember standing next to my bike, and out of the corner of my eye seeing a flash of white. When I turned my head, I saw him, just sitting there. It was eerie. Just one lone wolf, white and gray, sitting in the woods watching us. We watched each other for a bit, but it was getting late, so we fired up our bikes and got back on the trail. I will never forget that!

I’ve had my fair share of run-in’s with Montana Wildlife, but that experience was definitely one I will never forget. I’ve wanted to paint a wolf for so long, but I wanted to do it in such a way that would accurately portray them. Not as a killer, and certainly NOT as cuddly and sweet, but as an animal that deserves our respect!
